Mary Lou Retton Suffers ‘Pretty Scary Setback’ in ICU, Olympian’s Daughter Says
Mary Lou Retton’s daughter is giving fans an update on how the Olympian is doing amid her recent health scare. On Wednesday, Shayla Schrepfer took to Instagram to inform her mom’s fans that she suffered a complication after the former gymnast was admitted to the hospital with a rare form of Pneumonia earlier this month. “We were so excited, seeing so much progress and then yesterday we had a pretty scary setback,” she said. “She is still in ICU and we’re just working through some things as far as her setback goes. So, I just wanted to give an update there.” While her family had revealed on Oct. 14 that the 55-year-old was making progress, they are now announcing that her battle to recover has not been easy. Shayla went on to thank fans for their support as her mom continues to fight. “Thank you guys again for just the support. I’m getting so many messages and emails and it’s so great to see people love on her,” she added. Mary Lou remains one of the most decorated gymnasts of all time. She made history as the first American woman to win the all-around gold at the 1984 Olympics, also taking home two silver medals and two bronze medals at that year’s Games.
