Madonna Sued Over Material Girl Clothing Line

Madonna only just launched her Material Girl Clothing line, and already she’s been hit with a lawsuit from a company that claims they’ve been using the same brand name since 1997.

In a suit filed on Aug. 19 in Los Angeles Central District Court, LA Triumph claims they started a clothing line under the “Material Girl” name in 1997 and have sold their wares at a host of stores ever since.

“LA Triumph and its predecessor have sold millions of dollars of the ‘Material Girl’ brand of clothes in commerce throughout the United States, and have spent large sums in its promotion and advertisement,” the lawsuit stated.

The company claims Madonna’s line is “infringing” on their use of the name “Material Girl.”

They are asking the court to declare that LA Triumph is the “rightful owner” of the “Material Girl” name “with respect to clothing,” according to the lawsuit, obtained by Access Hollywood.

LA Triumph is also asking for damages of an unspecified amounts and the profits Madonna’s Material Girl line has made.

Madonna released her “Material Girl” single in 1985 and has been referred to by that moniker ever since.

When reached for comment by Access, a rep for the pop star was unaware of the suit, while a rep for her clothing line had no comment.
