
Former President George W. Bush said his final goodbye to his dad.
During former President George H.W. Bush’s funeral at Washington National Cathedral on Wednesday, his son took to the pedestal to share sweet memories of his late father – and he couldn’t help but let out a few tears as he recalled what a wonderful dad his father really was.
In the tearful eulogy, Bush praised his dad and thanked him for teaching him how to be his best self.
“To his very last days, Dad’s life was instructive. As he aged, he taught us how to grow with dignity, humor and kindness — and when the good Lord finally called, how to meet Him with courage and with the joy of the promise of what lies ahead.”
The former President also shared found memories of the late politician. He noted that his father really knew how to “die young.”
“In his nineties, he took great delight when his closest pal James A. Baker smuggled a bottle of Grey Goose vodka into his hospital room. Apparently it paired well with the steak Baker had delivered from Mortons,” he shared.
During the emotional speech, Bush also revealed what his last words to his father were. Bush was told to call his dad because he “only had minutes to live” last Friday.
“I said, “Dad, I love you and you’ve been a wonderful father,'” Bush recalled. “And the last words he would ever say on Earth were, ‘I love you, too.'”
Bush choked up at the end of his powerful eulogy, and leaned back on the podium for support. The emotion was palatable throughout the room as his brother Jeb Bush was also seen wiping away tears from his pew. As he walked away from the the podium, Bush patted his father’s coffin twice before he went back to his seat.
George W. was the oldest son of Bush Sr., who passed away at the age of 94 on Friday.
