President George H.W. Bush was the longest living President in U.S. history.
A Bush spokesperson announced that Bush passed away at 10:10 pm. He is survived by five children and their spouses as well as 17 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two siblings.
His wife of 73 years and the love of his life, Barbara, died April 17 of this year. He was by her side at the time of her passing. The family grieved her loss this year, yet also had reason to come together and celebrate one final time. The Bush family gathered for the wedding of Barbara Bush, the President’s granddaughter at their Maine estate in a surprise and intimate ceremony in early October.
President George H.W. Bush was known for being the patriarch of the Bush family political dynasty.
President Trump and President Obama both shared statements on his passing.
Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama said, “America has lost a patriot and humble servant.”
“George H.W. Bush’s life is a testament to the notion that public service is a noble, joyous calling. And he did tremendous good along the journey. Expanding America’s promise to new immigrants and people with disabilities,” the Obamas wrote in a statement on Twitter. “Reducing the scourge of nuclear weapons and building a broad international coalition to expel a dictator from Kuwait. And when democratic revolutions bloomed across Eastern Europe, it was his steady, diplomatic hand that made possible an achievement once thought anything but – ending the Cold War without firing a shot.”
President Trump and his wife Melanie said they joined the country in grieving on Friday evening.
“Through his essential authenticity, disarming wit, and unwavering commitment to faith, family, and country, President Bush inspired generations of his fellow Americans to public service—to be, in his words, ‘a thousand points of light’ illuminating the greatness, hope, and opportunity of America to the world,” the Trumps said.
“Funeral arrangements will be announced as soon as is practical,” a statement from George H.W. Bush’s office added.
