Andre Benjamin Joins ‘American Crime’ Season 2

“American Crime” is exploring its musical side, at least in terms of casting.

ABC’s dramatic anthology has welcomed OutKast’s Andre Benjamin for Season 2, Access Hollywood confirmed on Saturday.

The actor and musician, who goes by Andre 3000 when performing with the hip-hop duo, will play architect Michael Lacroix, husband to returning star Regina King’s character.

Benjamin and King’s onscreen personas make for “a true power couple” who are “prominent members of the community in which they reside,” ABC said in a statement to Access.

“They have both the financial means, as well as the acumen needed to fiercely defend their son when he becomes entangled in a scandal at an elite private school,” the network said of the show’s upcoming storyline.

“American Crime” marks Benjamin’s first network television series, but the Grammy winner is no stranger to acting. In addition to co-starring roles in “Semi-Pro,” “Four Brothers” and a guest stint on FX drama “The Shield,” Benjamin also played legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix in “American Crime” creator John Ridley’s 2013 film “Jimi: All Is by My Side.”

“Personally, I couldn’t be more excited than to work again with Andre,” the “12 Years a Slave” screenwriter said in a statement released to Access. “He is an amazing individual, a true artist.”

The Oscar winner added that he believes the success of “American Crime” is at least partially credited to his previous work with Benjamin on the biopic.

“‘All Is by My Side’ is one of the reasons I was given the reins on ‘American Crime,'” Ridley said. “Folks at ABC were absolutely moved by Andre’s performance in the film, and by the overall language of cinema we used in telling the story. It’s fair to say ‘American Crime’ might not exist were it not for our previous collaboration.”
