Tom Cruise Surprises SAG-AFTRA Negotiation Meeting To Rally Against AI Use Ahead Of Strike (Report)
It seems Tom Cruise found one mission too impossible even for him. The movie superstar reportedly made a surprise appearance at a negotiating session between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers in June, weeks before the actors’ union launched its current strike. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Cruise Zoomed into the meeting to plead with the AMPTP to consider the guild’s proposals, particularly those regarding the use of AI and better compensation for stunt performers. Despite the A-lister’s efforts, however, a source who was present told the mag that the talks were “uncomfortable” as Cruise reportedly made a case for actors to continue promotional work during the strike. Access Hollywood has reached out to Cruise for comment. SAG-AFTRA members hit picket lines outside major studios starting on July 14, and the “Oppenheimer” cast left the film’s London premiere early in solidarity as the news broke. Union president Fran Drescher made headlines for a fiery speech ahead of the strike, explaining why she felt the guild was given no other choice. Comcast, the corporation which owns our parent company NBCUniversal, is one of the entertainment companies represented by the AMPTP. Some employees of the NBC News Group are represented by SAG-AFTRA.
