The Weeknd Admits He Wants ‘The Idol’ To ‘Piss Some People Off’ In Candid Cannes Remarks
The Weeknd is revealing the inspiration behind his highly anticipated HBO series “The Idol.” The drama premiered its first two episodes at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival on Monday. It follows aspiring pop star Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) as she begins a relationship with a self-help guru and the head of a contemporary cult. While talking to reporters at a press conference, the Grammy winner revealed why he wanted to make the show. “[Sam Levinson and I] wanted to really focus on, ‘Can we create our own pop star?’ … using my experiences, using his experiences as an artist, using Lily’s experiences from her point of view, to create something special, daring, exciting, fun, make people laugh, p**s some people off,” he said. “The Idol” premieres June 4 on HBO and will also stream on Max.
