‘SNL’s’ Bowen Yang Denies Mocking Chappell Roan Amid Backlash Over Viral Moo Deng Sketch
“Saturday Night Live’s” Bowen Yang is feeling “Hot to Go” over backlash from Chappell Roan fans. The comedian shut down criticism surrounding a now-viral appearance on “Weekend Update” in which he channeled the pop star while dressed as viral baby hippo Moo Deng. Some viewers thought the bit was insensitive toward Chappell’s public comments about facing obsessive followers and the pressures of fame. Bowen fired back at claims he was mocking the singer, taking to his Instagram story to make it clear he’s on her side. “Oh geez. ‘Mocks’ ??? If my personal stance and the piece aren’t absolutely clear in terms of supporting her then there it is I guess. Everything she has ever asked for has been reasonable and even then we can connect it to another story about boundaries or whatever, ” he wrote, adding, “Needing the hose rn…” in reference to part of the sketch where he was sprayed in the face with water. The segment comes days after Chappell canceled two scheduled festival appearances, explaining that she needed to “prioritize [her] health” after an “overwhelming” few weeks.
