Zack Snyder Set To Direct New ‘Superman’ Film

Zack Snyder, get ready to meet the Man of Steel.

Snyder is in final negotiations to direct the upcoming “Superman” big screen reboot, a rep for the director confirmed to Access Hollywood.

In landing the gig, the “Watchmen” and “300” director beat out an impressive list of rumored candidates, which included Ben Affleck, Darren Aronofsky, Robert Zemeckis and Tony Scott.

“I feel awesome,” Snyder told The Los Angeles Times’ Hero Complex blog. “I feel super awesome.”

Assuming there are no hiccups in negotiations, Snyder would work hand-in-hand with “The Dark Knight” director/producer Christopher Nolan, who will produce the latest chapter in the Man of Steel saga.

“I can’t say why they came to me other than the fact that they know I have a fondness for the character and a real desire to understand him and present him to a new audience,” Snyder added to Hero Complex. “The challenge is huge but you know with Chris and [producers] Emma [Thomas] and Debbie [Snyder, the director’s wife and production partner], I have a lot of people I can rely on. And Chris and David have given this the shape with a great story. It is a hard character to crack.”

In addition, “Batman Begins” scribe David Goyer will pen the Superman script.

While plot details are being kept under wraps, Snyder said he is already thrilled with what he’s seen.

“I’ve been a big fan of the character for a long time, he’s definitely the king of all superheroes, he’s the one,” Snyder said in a separate interview with Deadline. “It’s early yet, but I can tell you that what David and Chris have done with the story so far definitely has given me a great insight into a way to make him feel modern. I’ve always felt he was kind of awesome.”

As for which actor will don the coveted “S” on his chest – that part’s still unannounced — but Snyder told Variety Brandon Routh likely wouldn’t return to reprise his role from 2006’s “Superman Returns.”

Warner Bros., the studio behind the film, is aiming for a holiday 2012 release for the new film.
