‘The Vampire Diaries’: Ian Somerhalder & Candice King On Those Troublesome Heretics

There are big problems in Mystic Falls on “The Vampire Diaries” now that the heretics are in town.

In the show’s Season 7 premiere, Stefan surrendered the town over to them. He did it to help protect the innocent and for his brother, Damon, while Lily’s (new) family continues to act out. Giving away the town and, in particular, their home though, isn’t sitting well with Ian Somerhalder’s character.

“It’s kind of a multi-layered problem,” Ian told Access Hollywood of the situation at hand. “So, Stefan gave the town over to Lily… and our house for god’s sake. What about our f***ing house! And Damon’s pissed because he’s basically openly saying to Stefan, ‘Listen, you gave up our town and our house to save the lives of a bunch of people that you don’t give a sh** about! So why are you kowtowing, why are you succumbing to Lily’s requests, not thinking by the way, that she is exorbitantly powerful to a tune of stuff we’ve never seen before?’ So that, in and of itself, is the first really big problem that Damon just can’t wrap his head around.

Damon is also dealing with issues related to having his long-lost mother return.

“She was put away for a very long time and while yes, she was awful, she rehabilitated herself, and all she wanted to do as the den mother of this family was to make sure that they had a place at the table and she wanted nothing more than [for] her sons to be able to get along with them, and Damon’s just not having it. That’s one of the other components,” Ian continued. “But then, [more than just] imposing her will [on the town], the mommy issues that this created. … The two people that Damon loved more than anyone in the world were Katherine and his mom, and they abandoned him, and hid it from him, so naturally, he’s pretty f***ed up about it. And so it raises all these issues of, ‘Why me? What did I do in life to deserve to be abandoned like this?’ So all those fears and all that abandonment actually just comes flooding back in.”

Damon and Bonnie tore out the heart of one of the heretics in “TVD’s”
Season 6 premiere. Caroline and Matt tried to blow them up. Everyone is
going to now face the wrath of Lily’s angry family, Candice King told
Access.

“It’s going to get pretty bad for Caroline and the gang. Through Caroline, we’re also going to get to know these heretics in a different light,” she said. “We’re going to see what their goals are, why they’re in Mystical Falls. You’re going to learn everyone’s agenda. We’re gonna learn if all of them are bad or if any of them are good, so we’re definitely going to get to know these characters. … They’re here to stay and we’re gonna get to know how bad they can be and if they do have any mercy in their souls.”

“TVD’s” premiere ended with a huge time jump, looking forward three years into the future. And we’ll get more peeks into the future as the season rolls out.

“We’re going to see more flash forwards, but they’re really just going to be glimpses,” Candice explained. “We’re not at the point where we’re going to really get a lot of answers. We’re still going be asking a lot of questions. We’re also going to have some great flashbacks as this season goes on, and that not only is going to give us a look into who these heretics are, but we’re also going to learn a lot of really important information about [Damon] and Stefan and their history as brothers and as sons.”

Ian also hinted at more Damon/Stefan scenes on the way this season, as well as some rich story lines for the Mystic Falls gang.

“There’s great stuff with the boys – with the brothers, and Enzo’s amazing and you have Caroline, who’s really about to go through some serious sh**. You have Matt really taking a leadership role and really becoming a Sheriff and making sure the town is safe. You have Enzo, who obviously — he’s got a lot to do, a lot of turmoil. He wants to get it fixed. And you meet all these heretics,” Ian said. “And then you have Bonnie, and Bonnie’s struggle to really – not only mourn her friend, but to be a part of the really complicated idea that she’s tied to her best friend and that this man, this man Damon who loves Bonnie, really, at any given moment just thinks, ‘You know? What if that truck did hit her? What if she slipped down the stairs? Oh, wow, what if she choked on that bite of pasta? Like, wow, I wonder if I can suffocate her with this pillow?’ He really is going through all of those motions and then bringing himself back around. ‘No, no, no. That is not OK to think, you know? That is not OK to think.”

“The Vampire Diaries” continues Thursday at 8/7c on The CW.
