‘The Walking Dead’ EP Scott M. Gimple Teases ‘Enormous’ Season 6

“Talking Dead” returned for a one-off summer episode on Sunday night, sharing hints about the October return of AMC’s “The Walking Dead.”

On the show, Executive Producer Scott M. Gimple sat on the couch alongside fellow guest, actor Jorge Garcia, and during the show, he told host Chris Hardwick that the upcoming “TWD” season was going to be a big one.

“It is massive and it is ginormous,” Scott said.

“The crew and cast, writers and editors and everybody — I live in fear for my life because every script that comes out is just enormous,” he continued. “This is our biggest season yet, it’s our biggest premiere yet.”

When Chris asked about something he had heard EP Greg Nicotero had hinted at – that lots more walkers were on the way, Scott said “TWD’s” Season 6 opener has the “biggest” amount of the undead to date, but that the episode they’re currently filming – the show’s ninth – is “pretty big too” when it comes to walker count.

The EP didn’t reveal any major details about the new season, but he shared some insight into a moment from the end of the Season 5 finale, when Rick and Morgan came face to face after Rick shot Pete (after Deanna told him to).

“I think the thing about that moment is the last time they saw each other they were in the opposite position. Morgan was an admitted killer and Rick was not about that in that moment. Morgan was covered in dirt and blood and Rick was clean and the moment has completely turned and it’s just a bit jarring,” Gimple said of Rick’s reaction in the scene. “The smoke is still rising from his gun and he sees Morgan, not only seeing Morgan, but seeing Morgan seemingly together and he knows he has about a gallon of walker blood on top of him, so yeah, it’s jarring for him.”

In a taped interview from the set, Danai Gurira spoke about the meaning for Michonne when her character put her katana on her back in one of the final Season 5 moments, instead of on her wall after Pete used it to try and attack Rick (but by accident killed Reg instead).

“The katana being used to kill Reg was deeply traumatic for Michonne,” Danai said. “She had put it on that wall for the purposes of really exploring other parts of herself, you know, post-the apocalypse, stepping into this new identity she had, [that] everyone had to step into. For her, it was so connected to that particular weapon and the idea of stepping away from her weapon. And seeing what it would feel like to function in a different way was something that in some ways she paid for because to see it used in that way, against someone as wonderful as Reg, and to see her own weapon work against her own goals like that, it really did jar her into an understanding that ‘I have to be the one to harness the strength of this weapon because if I don’t do it, somebody else is gonna do it and I don’t trust who that could be.'”

In another video from the set, Eulyn Womble, “TWD’s” costume designer, shared a look at the costumes of three new characters fans will meet in Season 6 – Carter (Ethan Embry), who works in construction, Heath (Corey Hawkins), a supply runner with Glenn’s group, and Dr. Denise Cloyd (Merritt Weaver), whose has been staying indoors for some time.

“Two of them are beloved comic book characters, one of them is sort of an amalgam” [of other characters from the comics], Scott said. (Heath and Dr. Denise are in the comics).

Lennie James, who is back as Morgan, also turned up in a video clip, explaining he has been training hard on the bow staff.

“I’m slightly obsessed with it. I spend evenings in my apartment on my own, just playing music and just swinging a long stick in my front room,” he said.

“The Walking Dead” Season 6 premieres October 11 at 9 PM ET/PT on AMC.
