“The Mindy Project” returns for its fourth season this September on a new platform – Hulu.
The series premieres on September 15, and on Sunday at the Hulu portion of the Television Critics Association Tour, cast members shared details on what’s to come in the “Sliding Doors”-inspired episode.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Freida Pinto appear in the Season 4 premiere in an alternate universe that explores life for Mindy (Mindy Kaling) and Danny (Chris Messina) if their relationship had never happened.

When the show hits the streaming service, Mindy’s character will wake up in bed with Joseph’s character — a reality television producer.
“[He] plays a producer for all of that ‘Real Housewives’ [stuff.] … Best friends with Andy Cohen,” Ike Barinholtz said.

“And the kind of man [of] Mindy’s dreams, like, kind of related to Hollywood gossip,” Mindy added, noting Joseph’s character is also “a little retro.”
“But, he’s not what Mindy thinks,” she added.
“It was very fun to use him as a character that’s the ideal, but then it sort of goes in a very surprising direction,” she said.
Ike explained that Danny is dating Freida in the premiere.

“Kind of conversely, but without giving too much away, when Mindy goes to see the version of Danny if they had never fallen in love, he’s with Freida Pinto,” Ike said.
“I say to her, ‘Oh, Freida Pinto, oh my God. People always tell me we look alike. Do they tell you that we look alike?’ And she says, ‘I don’t know because you’re not famous,'” Mindy added.
“Raising Hope” alum Garret Dillahunt is also set to guest star this season on “The Mindy Project.” He’ll play someone (a doctor, presumably) who takes over for the Mindy character while she is on maternity leave.
