The Fosters: Maia Mitchell Previews Callie Jacob’s Reaction To Courtroom Twist

Callie Jacob will face not just the judge, but the moms she abandoned on the next episode of ABC Family’s “The Fosters.”

And, in a clip shown to writers at the Television Critics Association Winter Tour 2014 in Pasadena on Friday, it appeared that Stef (Teri Polo) and Lena Adams Foster (Sherri Saum) are not ready to take Maia Mitchell’s Callie back into their home.

“It’s difficult because she is running away from that and she is trying to get away from that because of Jude. But then, on another level, hearing the people that she thought [were] prepared to take her in… hearing that they’re not wanting to take her in any more… part of her is like, ‘This is what I needed. This is what I wanted,’ but on a very guttural level it’s like, ‘It’s distressing,’” Maia told AccessHollywood.com on Friday.

Learning that her foster family does not want to take her in will give Callie a new focus.

“It makes her even more determined to continue on the path that she’s going on,” Maia said. “It’s definitely a kick in the stomach for her, but then she… it’s an affirmation that this is the plan and that she’s gonna go and she’s gonna live independently and she’s gonna take that road and she’s gonna be with Brandon because the mums no longer want her,” Australian actress Maia said.

That path will take her in the direction of Rosie O’Donell, who joined the series in a guest arc, playing Rita Hendricks, a woman who works in the foster care system.

Maia said Callie will meet a number of other troubled young women in the coming episodes.

“They’re bad ass. They were amazingly cast. Basically, they all have different issues and it really does explore certain aspects of foster care, different elements of like the justice system, teenage youth issues, gangs,” she said.

“We actually went to one of these group homes for research and I was able to go along, which was amazing and a lot of the characters that you’ll see are actually based off of real conversations that I had with people,” she continued. “These stories [in our show] are very, very authentic and very real. None of it is kind of exaggerated.”’
