Steve Carell: ‘Foxcatcher’ Creeped Out My Parents

Steve Carell takes on a decidedly darker role than his usual fare playing convicted murderer John du Pont in “Foxcatcher.”

The actor’s performance is haunting (as are his facial prosthetics) – so much so that his parents were a little scared after watching the Bennett Miller-directed drama.

“I brought the screener home for Christmas and my parents watched it for the first time at their home in Massachusetts, and I got a call from my mom a couple of days later and she said, ‘I can’t stop thinking about it – it really got inside of me,'” Steve told Access Hollywood at the Palm Springs International Film Festival on Saturday.

“They are 90, so they — it’s really resonating with them,” he added with a laugh.

The former “Office” star said his parents weren’t used to seeing him in a disturbing light.

“I think it creeped them out a little bit,” he said.

Steve has already been nominated for a Golden Globe and SAG Award for his performance, and he’s looking forward to the upcoming award season.

“I have to get dressed up and go to these things,” he joked, adding, “It’s pretty cool.”

“Foxcatcher” – which also stars Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo – is in theaters now.
