Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens are growing up and branching out beyond their Disney darling showbiz starts – especially in their new film, “Spring Breakers”!
“I didn’t get to be as bad as the other girls,” Selena, 20, told Access at the “Spring Breakers” premiere in Hollywood on Thursday night, of her role in the raucous new Harmony Korine film (which follows four college girls who rob a restaurant to fund their spring break trip and wind up entangled with a drug/arms dealer). “It was definitely fun to kind of just let loose and be completely liberated by a film.”
Selena – whose “Wizards of Waverly Place” reunion episode coincidentally airs next week – said she’s happy “Spring Breakers” is opening at the same time, so she has something for her fans of all ages.
“That was a coincidence at first,” she said of the similar scheduling. “But I’m actually glad that it’s happened because I get to do something for the younger ones and then get to do [‘Spring Breakers’] for the older ones.”
Adding, “I’m here trying to do the best I can, making choices that I’m hoping for the best for. And as far as alienating any of my fans – I’m definitely not doing that, I just did a ‘Wizards’ reunion episode and it comes out next week. So, I’m excited!”
Selena’s “Spring Breakers” co-star/former Disney actress Vanessa Hudgens said she also enjoyed playing a darker role.
“It’s amazing… I think that I’m just growing,” she said. “I did ‘High School Musical’ like six years ago. So, it’s been a long time coming.”
When asked if she’s worried about any type of backlash from fans who are used to seeing her in a more wholesome light, she said she thinks, “fans are going to love it.”
Adding, “Those who are old enough to actually see it!”
“Spring Breakers” – which also stars James Franco and Ashley Benson – hits theaters on March 22.
