Taylor Swift has made a habit of writing about the ex-loves of her young life on her albums, and her newest one – according to a new report – takes aim at what appears to be a romance that went sour with rocker John Mayer.
Mayer and Swift spent time together in 2009, when they collaborated on “Half of My Heart,” a track from his last album, “Battle Studies,” and at the time rumors surfaced of a romance.
Based on lyrics from Swift’s new song, “Dear John,” off her upcoming LP “Speak Now,” it appears that their time together may have taken a romantic twist, and things ended badly with the now 32-year-old ladies’ man.
Yahoo’s Chris Willman reports that the chorus of Swift’s new song is: “Dear John/I see it all now that you’re gone/Don’t you think I was too young/To be messed with/The girl in the dress/Cried the whole way home/I should’ve known.”
Later, Willman reports that the second chorus finds Swift singing: “It was wrong/Don’t you think nineteen’s too young/To be played/By your dark, twisted games/When I loved you so.”
Another lyric references her mother: “My mother accused me of losing my mind/But I swore I was fine…”
Elsewhere, Swift sings: “You’ll add my name to your long list of traitors who don’t understand/And I’ll look back in regret I ignored what they said/‘Run as fast as you can’.”
Swift, herself, recently told Willman that her songs aren’t hard to interpret.
“They’re all made very clear,” she said, according to Willman. “Every single song is like a roadmap to what that relationship stood for, with little markers that maybe everyone won’t know, but there are things that were little nuances of the relationship, little hints. And every single song is like that. Everyone will know, so I don’t really have to send out emails on this one.”
It appears that “Twilight Saga” hunk Taylor Lautner gets a couple of songs on the album too – “The Story of Us,” which Willman reports features the lyrics, “I’d tell you I miss you but I don’t know how/I’ve never heard silence quite this loud.”
Lautner also reportedly was the inspiration for “Back to December,” which Swift said is her apology song.
“I think that you should be able to say that you’re sorry to someone, and sometimes the best way I know how to say anything is in a song,” she said, according to Willman.
