Queen Elizabeth is mourning the death of her fellow world leader President George H. W. Bush.
“It was with sadness that I learned of the death of President George H W Bush last night,” she said in a statement on Saturday, Dec. 1.
“President Bush was a great friend and ally of the United Kingdom. He was also a patriot, serving his country with honor and distinction in Office and during the Second World War,” she went on.
“Prince Philip and I remember our days in Texas with great fondness. My thoughts and prayers are with President Bush’s family and the American people,” she concluded.
Queen Elizabeth visited the White House in 1991, where she and Prince Philip exchanged gifts with President Bush and his wife Barbara, who passed away at age 92 in April 2018.
The powerful friends also spent time together at sporting events and even joked about Bush senior being the “black sheep of the family,” the Washington Post reports.
In 1993, The 41st President was knighted by the Queen at Buckingham Palace, which was also a special moment for the British monarch and her friend.
There’s will always be a friendship she will cherish.
