Would Molly Ringwald ever want to see the brain, the athlete, the basket case, the princess and the criminal from 1985’s “Breakfast Club” reunited on the big screen?
The 43-year-old actress stopped by Access Hollywood Live on Tuesday, where she revealed her feelings about ever attempting to remake the classic John Hughes film.
“They constantly talk about a ‘Breakfast Club’ reunion, is that even possible?” Billy Bush asked the actress.
“No, I don’t think so,” she firmly said. “Particularly with John Hughes passing, I don’t think that anybody would feel that was the right thing to do.”
Molly, who currently stars on ABC Family’s “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” is only open to seeing a film get remade if it doesn’t have that “classic” film tag.
“You know, I think if they didn’t get it right the first time, I think it makes sense to remake them, but if a movie is already a classic, I don’t see the point in remaking them,” she explained to Billy and Kit Hoover.
These days, the 80’s star fondly looks back on her past movies and co-stars, but revealed that her original casting idea for “Sixteen Candles’” Jake Ryan wasn’t her co-star Michael Schoeffling.
“I really wanted [Viggo Mortensen],” she said of the actor best known for his role as Aragorn in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. “He made me weak in the knees. He really did.”
As for Michael, Molly has lost touch with the former teen hunk.
“I don’t know, that is sort of the big question. I think he quit show business and the last I heard he’s a carpenter and he had a family,” she told Billy and Kit. “But, I don’t know, that’s just… Wikipedia.”
Molly is now happily married to Panio Gianopoulos, with whom she has three children with, Mathilda, 7 and twins, Adele and Roman, 2.
The mother of three told Billy and Kit that she employed the help of a famous boy wizard when trying to explain the recent Osama bin Laden news.
“I was trying to explain to my 7-year-old the events of 9/11. It’s very difficult trying to explain who Osama bin Laden was to a 7-year-old. ‘Harry Potter’ became very useful,” she said. “Well, I said he was kind of like Voldemort, in a way, and I explained a little bit more and she disagreed and said he was really much more like Sirius Black before everybody finds out that he’s good, because nobody actually goes looking for Voldermort, which I thought was a very good point.”
The actress, who also penned the book, “Getting the Pretty Back: Friendship, Family, and Finding the Perfect Lipstick,” said only her oldest daughter has watched the films that made her a teen icon.
“The only movie that Matilda has seen is ‘Sixteen Candles.’ She loved it. I asked her what her favorite moment in the movie was, and it was – of course – kissing Jake Ryan on the table with the cake,” Molly said. “The idea for her that you can like someone and they can like you back, she’s just at that age, where she’s starting to like boys, so for her, you know, I think all the other stuff kind of went over her head.”
