Mike Myers On ‘SNL 40’: Last Minute Invite & Unrehearsed ‘Wayne’s World’ Skit

Did Mike Myers’ invitation to the 40th anniversary of “Saturday Night Live” get lost in the mail?

The actor – who was an “SNL” cast member from 1989-1995 – told David Letterman on Friday night’s “Late Show” that he learned he was in the lineup from a TV ad before even knowing he made the guest list.

“‘SNL 40′ was thrilling,” he said. “I didn’t know I was invited. I never received a formal invitation, so I was watching the ads on TV on the Super Bowl. It would be like, you know, ”SNL 40′ – Jim Carrey, Ben Stiller, Mike Myers.’ And I was like, ‘I wasn’t invited.'”

Then, at the last minute, he said he received a phone call from “SNL’s” executive producer, Lorne Michaels, who asked if he’d reprise his “Wayne’s World” character, Wayne Campbell, in a skit with Dana Carvey (who played Garth Algar in the 1992 and 1993 films).

“Like a week and a half before, Lorne called and said, ‘Mike, any chance of a ‘Wayne’s World’?’ I was like, ‘Am I invited?’ He was like, ‘Right, of course you’re invited,'” Mike said. “I had no idea, so I wrote it up and then he’s like, ‘There won’t be a chance to rehearse. Is that OK?’

“I’ve never done anything without rehearsal,” he continued. “I was scared and I sat there and it was like, you know, 10 seconds live, Dana and I never rehearsed it, and I said to Dana, ‘I’m 51 with two kids and I’m wearing a wig. Am I an idiot? What’s going on?’… And Dana, which is why he’s Dana Carvey, so fantastic, he just said, ‘Dude, we’re just gonna have fun.'”
