Kelsey Grammer surprised television critics and reporters on Thursday by interrupting a press event for Season 2 of his Starz drama “Boss” to answer a phone call live on stage.
It was while responding to a question from AccessHollywood.com about meeting his new co-star, T.I. prior to working together, that Kelsey’s phone first rang. T.I. got a chance to explain he immediately recognized the actor as “Frasier” when they first met, before Kelsey took the call at the Television Critics Association summer tour in Beverly Hills.
“It’s a good thing, we’re growing closer,” Kelsey responded to Access’ question before switching to his phone. “I have to answer this for one second.
“Hi, Ok, cool. I’m on stage right now, but go ahead,” he could be heard saying to his wife, Kayte Grammer.
“Oh, that sounds great,” he continued, as the conversation ticked on. “You know what? They should bring the trucks… OK, all right honey. Call Stan though.”
Finally, after Kelsey began reading out a phone number, his microphone was switched off.
Later, at the end of the panel, a reporter, noting that much of the coverage of the “Boss” session would likley be devoted to Kelsey taking a call during the TCA tour, asked the actor to explain why he picked up the line.
“Ah, well there are some things that are more important than others and the well-being of my wife sits atop the charts,” he said.
During the session, Kelsey was also asked about not receiving an Emmy nomination for playing Mayor Tom Kane on “Boss,” and he said he expected the snub.
“I didn’t get a SAG nomination, so I figured a lot of the same people were probably voting for the Emmys, and to me, I kind of thought I wouldn’t get one because it didn’t happen the first time, why would it happen the next,” he said. “For some reason, my peers don’t’ seem to think is worth recognizing.”
“I don’t think it’s that, Kelsey,” the actor’s “Boss” co-star – Sanaa Lathan — chimed in.
“Well, it’s happened twice now,” he said.
Season 2 of “Boss” premieres Friday, August 17 on Starz.
