The pressures of having a relationship in the public eye can be daunting for many celebrity couples, but some actually enjoy it.
Access Hollywood caught up with Katherine Heigl and Josh Kelley – who have been married for almost four years – backstage at the American Music Awards on Sunday, where the happy couple shared their secrets to successful marriage in the Hollywood spotlight.
“It’s not easy, but it is ideal if we both have our own thing, our own passions, our own focus on our careers. We can kind of come back to each other and there’s this fire there,” the 32-year-old actress told Access Hollywood guest correspondent Tim Vincent backstage at the AMAs.
“We’re happy because we have these great careers that we’re happy with. That happiness is infectious – it sort of bleeds into everything,” Katherine continued.
Josh, 31, said their busy lives helps to keep their relationship healthy.
“There are some points of it when it actually can be a little bit easier because if I was home for longer than three or four weeks at a time, I don’t think she could put up with me honestly. I think I’d be out of here,” the singer/songwriter explained. “I think it works for us for sure, because absence does actually make the heart grow fonder if it’s not for too long. It’s like new for the first couple days back every time I come home and it’s really sweet.”
The couple, who adopted daughter Naleigh – almost 3 – in 2009, said their public careers are also a source of bonding.
“Because you’re in the same business, you understand. Even though my business is different, being in music and her being an actress, you understand what kind of day she’s been through, if it’s grueling,” Josh added. “You have things to talk about.”
