Julianne Hough can add another thing to her already stacked resume— author!
The “Dancing with the Stars” co-host released her first book earlier this month—a supernatural fiction novel titled, “Everything We Never Knew.”
“It is my version of being able to share my universal [themes] of what I have gone through in my life, without giving all my personal details to everyone,” she revealed on Access Hollywood’s Behind the Easel.
The book is about a woman’s journey of self-discovery and although it is fiction, Julianne told Access she still had to reassure some of her loved ones that it wasn’t about them.
“I called my mom today and was like, ‘Hey mom just so you know, I know I’ve talked to you about this, but you’re not the mom in my book. Just so you know, because there are some heavy things in there and I just want you to know, you’re not the mom don’t worry,’” Julianne admitted.
That wasn’t the only person Julianne called ahead of the book’s release.
“I’ve had to do a few little like conversations with people to be like, this isn’t about you. I have a lot to do with Lexi, but I am not Lexi,” she told Access.
When it came to writing the book, Julianne said it was “easy” because “it was so much of my lived experience, as well as my understanding of relating to others as much as I could you know and pulling experiences that other people have had.”
But the 36-year-old didn’t write the novel alone. She tapped Ellen Goodlett, who co-wrote it with her in 2020.
“I know my strengths, which is I am a high concept creative person, with big ideas and I can see worlds and I can see characters and the themes, but I am not somebody who went to school to write and I hired somebody to be my ghostwriter at the beginning. Throughout the process I was like we really wrote this together,” she said.
Now that she’s released a novel, could a memoir be next for Julianne?
“I’m kinda loving this fiction world right now, and I’m going to just stay there for now,” she said.
Aside from writing, Julianne is getting ready to co-host another season of “Dancing with the Stars,” which premieres in the fall.
“This has been my family you know for ever and hosting with Alfonso [Ribeiro] has been amazing,” she said.
Julianne has worn several hats on the show, from dancing to hosting and even being a judge!
“It’s been life-changing.” She said. “I went to sleep at 18 years old, literally just graduated high school and then all the sudden in people’s living rooms around the country and these people have followed my career for almost 18 years. They’ve been my family and supported me and been on this journey of me trying different things along the way.”
When Julianne isn’t busy working, she is enjoying life.
“I’ve never felt happier,” she told Access. “I’ve never felt more stable and secure and consistent in how I’m showing up in my life. I’ve never felt more creative. I’ve never felt more trusting of myself and aligned in who I am and who I want to continue evolving to become.”
With all that in mind Julianne said she is open to dating, but it would take a “special person” for her to date again.
“What that means to me, taking someone really special, is that they have a self-love and they have a desire to grow and to be aware of the things in their life that they’re working on and stuff,” she said.
“I want to show up in my most authentic place so that I can match whoever is in that place too,” she said. “I’m not going to chase it, but I’m also very open and my heart is so open and ready to receive.”
Julianne’s book, “Everything We Never Knew” is out now. “Dancing with the Stars” premieres Sept. 17 on ABC.
