James Spader is checking out of “The Office.”
Access Hollywood has learned that the actor, who plays Robert California, the Chief Executive Officer of Sabre – Dunder Mifflin’s parent company – is leaving the show.
“James always wanted this to be a one-year arc, and he now leaves us having created one of the most enigmatic and dynamic characters in television,” “The Office” executive producer Paul Lieberstein (who plays Toby) said in a statement. “He’s been a great friend to me and the show, helping us successfully transition into the post-Michael Scott years, and I’m grateful for that.”
Spader, formerly of “Boston Legal,” joined the show as a potential candidate vying for Michael Scott’s job, as Steve Carell departed the cast in 2011.
The Robert California character got the job, but eventually used his persuasive skills to make the leap to the parent company.
Spader will next be seen on the big screen in ”Lincoln,” from director Steven Spielberg, due out in December 2012.
