Healthy Hollywood: Get Movin’ Monday – Misty May-Treanor’s Winning Workout!

Olympian Misty May-Treanor has her eye on the gold. The two-time beach volleyball medalist is playing for her third gold medal with her teammate, Kerri Walsh, this summer at the London 2012 games. Misty says this will be her final Olympics.

Misty reveals to Healthy Hollywood, she and Kerri are working hard to make sure they come back from London winners. “Kerri and I are practicing five days a week, for two hours a day with our coach. But that doesn’t include the other two to three hours we’re putting in with weights, Pilates, yoga, or physical therapy.”

At 34, Misty has said she’s ready to retire from the Olympic training track and possibly start a family with her husband, Dodgers baseball player Matt Treanor. But first, she’s all about getting in shape and making sure her legs are in top condition. “I need to be jumping the same in the beginning of the tournament as the end, so it’s important to keep my legs very strong. I’m on the shorter side (she’s 5’ 9”) of the players these days, everybody is at least 6 feet tall, so I incorporate a lot of squats, lunges and Olympic lifts. As a volleyball player having strong shoulders and a strong core is very important, so I focus on those areas as well.”

Misty recently teamed up with Arnold/Oroweat breads for their sandwich recipe contest. The winner will receive a private volleyball clinic with her. “I’m looking for a sandwich that’s creative and good for you, and still tastes greats.” Plus, Misty reveals to Healthy Hollywood, sandwiches are a big part of her training regimen. “I grew up eating their breads, and for me, especially with as much on-the-go activity as I have throughout the day, carrying a sandwich with me is important. It keeps my energy up. I think you have to fuel your body with the right foods in order to perform at your best.” Tuna and avocado on whole wheat is her favorite go-to sandwich. “I add some onion and sprouts to give it a little crunch,” adds Misty.
