Glam Slam: Prom Trends 2011

I got a reader request to write about Prom trends and so I went straight to Teen Vogue to bring you today’s Glam Slam!

Hollywood, as always, is a good place to get inspiration for a special fancy-schmancy night like Prom. Here’s the style breakdown to help your Prom-goer pick her look.

Party Girl:
WHAT: Bright and flirty mini-dresses with a full shorter skirt–bouncy, fun, flirty style. Embellished with unique patterns, ruffles, polka dots or even plaid.

COLORS: Jewel tones such as saffron, emerald green, turquoise, deep purple.

THE DETAILS: Perfect for the girl who is confident and loves to wear bright colors and a little sparkle. She will be happy on the dance floor and her accessories should be fun and playful as well.

WHO: Rihanna, Blake Lively, Leighton Meester

Rock Princess:
WHAT: Daring and very edgy, short length with bold accents. Embellished with silver or gold beads, studs, feathers or lace.

COLORS: Black and bold dark colors.

THE DETAILS: An alternative to girly or feminine, a super cool girl who isn’t afraid to wear a leather jacket with a party dress, dark colors, stud accessories, black lace, metallic shine, she can be creative with her hair and makeup to complete the look.

WHO: Emma Watson, Kristen Stewart

Prom Queen:
WHAT: Glamorous, long and flowing, embellished with beads, sequins or lace.

COLORS: Silvers and pastel tones; lavender, pale green, peach, light pink.

THE DETAILS: Quintessential prom dresses, a very whimsical and demure prom look, pastel colors, soft fabrics and long dramatic shapes, paired with prom perfect feminine bags and accessories, a little sparkle.

WHO: Taylor Swift

Lovely Lace:
WHAT: Ballet inspired, feminine, soft and graceful. Embellished with frills or delicate lace.

COLORS: White and soft pink.

THE DETAILS: Very ethereal and pure, chic, clean and minimal, white laces, eyelet and sheer layers, minimal accessories, but the dresses them self have plenty of detail.

WHO: Michelle Williams, Diane Kruger

Boho Romantic:
WHAT: Indie inspired, vintage style. Long, looser fit and flowing shapes. Can either be embellished with ruffles and beading or very simple– allowing attention to be drawn to the unique shape of the dress.

COLORS: Neutrals, soft & warm colors (browns, creams).

THE DETAILS: A little quirky and offbeat, very much influenced by personal style, retro-vintage inspiration, white lace, tarnished sparkle, very pretty without being too sweet.

WHO: Alexa Chung
