As I put on berry colored lip gloss the other day, I realized it’s a very Winter-ish color and it was time to start thinking Spring! At least my putty colored nails are on the right track, according to People StyleWatch Beauty Editor Holly Carter, who shares her predictions for the next big things in beauty.
THE FLATTERING HAIR LENGTH
The look of super-long, extension filled hair is over – finally! These days it’s about having a more natural, chic style. Last year’s super-popular LOB or Long Bob, has grown out and is now a bit longer. The hippest hair length now falls a few inches below the collarbone.
THE HIP HAIR COLOR
The general idea is that hair color shouldn’t look fake – so chunky, stripy highlights and highly processed hair isn’t the way to go. Instead, you just want play up your hair’s natural tones. If you are going to color your hair, celebrity colorist Rita Hazan recommends choosing a warm shade and not adding multiple colors to the mix.
THE COOL HAIR STYLE
Braids are bigger than ever. Of course the style has been around forever, but we’re seeing a trend toward a specific kind of braid for Spring. It’s all about just one, long, slightly undone plait. And tons of celebs (Kate Hudson, Vanessa Hudgens, Denise Richards, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen) are wearing the look.
THE LOOK FOR LIPS
There are two ways to go – vibrant or natural. On the bright side, there’s orange-red and fuchsia. And don’t be scared of such notice-me shades. Just use neutral shades for your face. For something more subtle, stick to coral or pink. Whatever shade you choose, try going for a richly pigmented lipstick instead of gloss. You’ll make more of a statement.
THE PERFECT POLISH
From Chanel’s Particuliere to Sally Hansen’s Commander in Chic, putty (or a warm grey) is on hip hands everywhere. It’s a fresh alternative to more classic neutral beige or pink. For something on the lighter side, lilac looks soft and super-girlie.
The February People StyleWatch “What’s Hot! What’s Not!” issue is on stands now.
