Part of
Donald Trump’s inaugural address sounded awfully familiar to some Batman fans.
Following
the new President’s swearing in on Friday, social media users noted that one
line from his speech seemed to echo supervillain Bane from “The Dark
Knight Rises.”
Speaking on
the front steps of the U.S. Capitol, Trump told his
audience that “we are transferring the power from Washington, D.C., and
giving it back to you, the people.”

In Christopher Nolan’s 2012 film, Tom Hardy’s masked character shares a similar sentiment while pledging to shift control in Gotham City.
“We take Gotham from the corrupt, the rich, the oppressors of generations who have kept you down with myths of opportunity, and we give it back to you – the people,” Bane says. “Gotham is yours.”

Days before taking office, now-President Trump tweeted a photo of himself working on the speech at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, which he dubbed the “Winter White House.”

The “Dark Knight” comparison isn’t the first time a Trump statement has been likened to a popular movie.
Speaking with the Washington Post in an interview published online last week, Trump told the paper his planned slogan for the 2020 campaign is “Keep America Great.” The phrase mirrors the tagline used for the horror sequel “Purge: Election Year,” a coincidence which was also pointed out on social media.
