David Arquette has revealed to Oprah Winfrey the very words he used when his closest family and friends confronted him with an intervention late last year.
“I go, ‘What up turkeys? I guess this is my intervention,’” the “Scream 4” star told Oprah in clips made available to Access Hollywood of Thursday’s “Oprah Winfrey Show.”
David revealed that his older sister, Patricia Arquette, and his wife, Courteney Cox, started the meeting, after he was sleeping off a trip to the East Coast.
“I came back from Miami and I’d taken a nap and I woke up and Patricia and Courteney were at my bed,” David told Oprah. “Courteney had a cup of coffee and I was like, ‘What are you two doing here together.’ Like I already knew. And she’s like, ‘Do you mind coming out into the living room for a second?’”
David said he “became sober on the 30th,” presumably referring to December 30, 2010, just days before he entered rehab. He also told the talk show host that the tabloid media got it wrong when he went out on New Year’s Eve. Despite the rumors, he was not under the influence of anything on the big night.
“I was sober at the New Year’s event,” he said. “It was at this club I was putting on… I had already been sober and so I went there because it was something I was planning on doing and I wanted to see if I could do it sober, if I could still entertain and dance around. And I could and I had a great time, but that’s sort of an example of the tabloids getting it wrong.”
In another clip Access Hollywood obtained, David revealed he had his first drink before he was even in school.
“I must’ve been 4 years old,” he said. “I was down in the basement with my dad and the beer was there and I just grabbed and drank it.”
Oprah asked David when he developed a “serious” drinking problem and David said it was before he entered high school.
“Seriously start drinking? Probably when I was about 12,” he said.
David added he first smoked pot while in grade school.
“Kids are doing a lot of stuff very early. I stole pot from my father when I was 8 years old,” he said.
David’s interview with Oprah will air on Thursday. Patricia and Rosanna Arquette are also part of the show.
