From boy wizard to a Broadway darling, Daniel Radcliffe has left Harry Potter behind and is singing and dancing his heart out in the spectacular Broadway revival of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.”
An animated Radcliffe paid a visit to the set of Access Hollywood Live in New York City (the interview airs Friday, check local listings) where he shared with Billy Bush his Katie Holmes moment, run-ins with rabid “Potter” fans in Japan and his rise to global superstardom.
“Particularly this last film, I’m so proud of the way we’ve gone out ‘cause I think it’s so much better than any of the other films made,” the actor told Billy, when asked about putting the finishing touches on the “Harry Potter” franchise.
When asked about being a global superstar in other countries and the reception he gets from “Potter” fans, he responded, “When I got to the airport in Japan at 13, there were 5,000 people screaming and waiting at arrivals… If I walk down the street there, there is just this kind of snowballing of people. I bumped into this girl in the corridor and said, ‘Oh, I’m sorry.’ And boom! [She] just fainted immediately.”
Now that he’s starring on Broadway, the star said it’s much of the same when he leaves the theater each night.
“I’ve been handed some very strange things. I’ve been given an Etch-A-Sketch, which was kind of awesome. That was a present from a fan I’d never been given before. And, I got told that I smelled good by three people last night,” Radcliffe joked.
The actor also told Billy about a certain performance one night where he incorporated a reference to Tom Cruise’s infamous couch jump on “Oprah,” after hearing that Tom’s wife – Katie Holmes – was in the audience to witness the act.
“I got very, very paranoid that night because she was in the audience and I did it and the audience reaction wasn’t nearly as much as it normally is and I was like, ‘Oh man, they all know she’s here’ and they’re like, ‘Wow, this is really awkward!’” he laughed. “But it was good.”
