Daniel Powter’s ‘Bad Day’ Dubbed Biggest One-Hit Wonder Of Decade

Perhaps you could say Daniel Powter had a “Bad” decade.

Powter’s pouty ballad, “Bad Day,” has been dubbed the biggest one-hit wonder of the decade thus far, according to Billboard.

The song, which “American Idol” used as their farewell song for contestants during the show’s fifth season, was the biggest single of 2006, landing in the top spot in April of that year, and staying put for five weeks.

According to the BBC News, the track was the most-played song in the UK from 2003 – 2008.

However, it was also the last song from the Canadian singer/songwriter to crack the Hot 100.

In defining their one-hit wonders, Billboard bestowed the honor to any artist or group whose first single reached the Hot 100’s Top 10, but whose second song failed to reach the Top 25 from 2000 – 20007.

Coming in second was Fat Joe’s Terror Squad, who stormed the charts in August 2004 with their new reclining dance-craze inspiring track “Lean Back.” Sadly, Terror Squad would never make it “Back” to the Top 10, as their next biggest hit, “Take Me Home,” only reached No. 62 on the chart.

Crazy Town’s “Butterfly” soared to the top of the charts in 2001 with their catchy pop-rap-rock track, but it was the only time the Shifty Shellshock-fronted group cracked the Hot 100, earning them the third spot on the list.

MIMS burned up the charts in 2007 with their hit “This Is Why I’m Hot,” claiming the top spot for two weeks in March of that year. But that heat quickly cooled and the Jamaican rapper’s next single, “Like This,” in July 2007 only made its way to the 32nd spot. Not bad, but good enough for the fourth biggest one-hit wonder thus far.

In 2006, fans sank their teeth into D4L’s “Laffy Taffy,” stretching the sweet single all the way to the top spot. But much like a sugar high, D4L came crashing down, with their next single, “Betcha Can’t Do It Like Me,” only making its way to No. 72. and rounding out the top five of the decade’s one-hit wonders.

Other notable numbers making Billboard’s dubious Top 10 list were James Blunt’s “You’re Beautiful” (#6), Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” (#7) and “American Idol” alum Bo Bice’s “Inside Your Heaven.” (#9).
