Charles Gibson will retire from his position as anchor of ABC’s “World News,” the network announced on Wednesday.
The veteran newsman, 66, has served as the “World News” anchor since 2006. He will be replaced by “Good Morning America” co-anchor Diane Sawyer at the end of this year.
“It has not been an easy decision to make,” Gibson reportedly said in an e-mail to co-workers. “This has been my professional home for almost 35 years. And I love this news department, and all who work in it, to the depths of my soul.”
According to ABC, Gibson had planned on retiring in 2007 before turnover at “World News” – including the death of anchor Peter Jennings – prompted him to accept the position. He had previously co-anchored “Good Morning America” for 19 years.
While his full-time days are over, he reportedly plans on “contributing occasionally” to ABC News.
