NEW YORK (May 22, 2006) — Karate choppin’ Tommy Hilfiger welcomed Axl Rose to his jungle in an unlikely brawl at a club called “The Plumm” in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood.
“From what I understand, Tommy took a punch around security and hit Axl right below the eye,” Plumm manager Tom Thompson told Access.
The hard rock vs. retail ruckus started Thursday, ironically enough, over a piece of clothing.
“There was a coat laying on a chair,” Tom Thompson told us. “Axl wanted to sit down and asked whose coat it was. Tommy refused to move it, and he said that was his seat and he was staying there.”
A still stunned Axl shared the story on L.A. radio station KROQ.
“It was the most surreal thing, I think, that’s ever happened to me in my life,” Axl said. “He just kept smacking me.”
The distressed designer reportedly coupled multiple smacks with a blow to Axl’s cheek before security broke them up.
Tommy’s security just escorted Tommy out, Tom Thompson told Access.
Axl then gave a surprise performance for “Rent” actress Rosario Dawson’s 27th birthday, dedicating “You’re Crazy” to “my good friend Tommy Hilfiger.”
Attempts to reach Tommy or a representative were not immediately successful.
At the time of the dustup, The Plumm was packed with a celebrity crowd including Lenny Kravitz, Mickey Rourke, Kid Rock, Peter Beard, Molly Simms, Wentworth Miller, Ann Dexter Jones, Lydia Hearst and Damon Dash.
